Sonus Faber Olympica G3

Sonus faber has released the third generation of their Olympica range, the G3. The original arrived in 2013, the Nova followed in 2019, and the G3 launched at the end of June and we are just now receiving demo speakers. Five models, same lute-shaped cabinet design, but with a fair amount changed underneath, most of which has trickled down from their Suprema flagship project. The Olympica G3 is beautifully crafted in Vicenza, Italy, and you can see and hear that Italian pride and passion come through in every model.

The Changes

Camelia midrange - The most significant one. First developed for the Suprema, it's a non-circular midrange driver, the shape is loosely based on a camellia flower, designed to avoid the resonance patterns you get with a conventional round cone. It runs with an aluminium phase plug and a damping ring, and the cone is left unpainted to maintain optimal mass.

Organic Basket - The drivers now sit in a honeycomb-structured frame, with better airflow around the cone and great mechanical stability, it helps deliver a cleaner bass line.

Cork-damped chamber - In both floorstanders, the tweeter and midrange are housed in a sealed chamber damped with a computer-modelled cork structure, a technique Sonus faber first used in the Suprema, which helped enhance the midrange resolution.

Tweeter - All models use the 28mm DAD (Damped Apex Dome) Arrow Point silk dome (18mm in the Centre), with frequency response extending to 40kHz.

Cosmetics - The lute-shaped cabinet stays, now with a herringbone real wood veneer in Walnut or Wengè, matte grey sandblasted aluminium trim, a new top plate, and string grilles in place of fabric to give that icon Sonus Faber look.

Olympica G3 I - £10,000/pair 2-way standmount. 28mm DAD tweeter, 165mm mid-woofer, 4 Ohm Nominal. Stands sold separately.

Olympica G3 III - £20,000/pair 3-way floorstander. 28mm DAD tweeter, 165mm Camelia midrange, twin 165mm woofers. 42Hz–40kHz, 90dB, 4 Ohm Nominal , rated for 50–300W amplification.

Olympica G3 V - £25,000/pair Same architecture as the III but with an added third woofer and a bigger cabinet volume (44kg each). 37Hz–40kHz, 90dB, 4 Ohm Nominal, 50–400W.

Olympica G3 Centre - £9,300 3-way centre channel. 18mm DAD tweeter, 101mm Camelia midrange with Copper Cap, twin 165mm woofers.

Olympica G3 On-Wall - £6,500 2-way sealed on-wall. 28mm DAD tweeter, 165mm mid-woofer. Supplied with bracket.

The Nova III has been a fixture in our demo room since 2019 and we know it well, so it made the obvious reference point.

The Nova series was always voiced to be warm, forgiving, easy to listen to and that’s exactly what they give you, Eva’s voice soft and soulful. The difference with the G3 is her vocals now have a little more lift and life with added body. You are presented with her vocals standing out more full and a greater sense of intimacy that draws you in.

Then throwing on a little bit of everything, from Billy Joel Vienna (love the whole The Stranger album), foots tapping and singing along to Paganimi - Violin Concerto No.2 “La Campanella” performed by London Philharmonic, strings sound brilliant transients handled with ease without any sense of harshness. Where the Novas could be at times too relaxed, the G3 remedied this but has kept that whimsical warmness that keeps you listen for hours and able to throw any genre or recording at them.
