Denon AVC-A1H

Denon's flagship. Fifteen channels at 150W, 15.4 processing, four sub outputs, MultEQ XT32 and Dirac Live ready, in a 32kg chassis with a monoblock-style power supply. Overkill for a 5.1 — and that's the point: this is the amp you buy once, then build out to 9.4.6 around it. With the 700 S3 it's the no-compromise route.

Fronts

• 702 S3 — The top of the range. Three-way floorstander with the Carbon Dome tweeter in its own solid-body housing on top, a Continuum FST midrange and three 6.5in Aerofoil bass units. The one to choose if the room is large or you want 800-series scale without the 800-series bill.
• 703 S3 — Same tweeter-on-top and Continuum midrange as the 702, with two 6.5in bass drivers instead of three. For most rooms this is the best balance of scale, bass weight and price in the range — our default recommendation.
• 704 S3 — Slim three-way floorstander with the tweeter built into the cabinet and twin 5in bass units. Easier to place, easier on the eye, and still a proper floorstanding presentation in medium rooms.
• 705 S3 — The standmount with the tweeter-on-top. Continuum 6.5in mid/bass with the same Carbon Dome tweeter as the floorstanders. On good stands and with one of the subs below it gives up surprisingly little to the 704.
• 706 S3 — Conventional standmount with the Carbon Dome tweeter in the baffle and a 6.5in Continuum driver. Smaller footprint, lower price, and with a DB-series sub doing the bass it makes a very capable front pair in a compact room.

Centre (included automatically)

• HTM71 S3 — Three-way centre with its own tweeter-on-top and dedicated Continuum midrange, so dialogue sounds the same as the fronts. Paired with the 702, 703 and 705.
• HTM72 S3 — Two-way centre with twin 5in Continuum drivers. Timbre-matched to the 704 and 706 and shallow enough for most AV cabinets.

Surrounds

• 707 S3 — The smallest 700 S3 speaker: 5in Continuum driver and Carbon Dome tweeter. Wall-brackets or stands easily and keeps the whole system in the same voice. The sensible surround for most rooms.
• 706 S3 — Steps up to the 6.5in driver for more weight in the rear channels. Worth it in larger rooms or if you listen to a lot of music in multichannel.
• 705 S3 — Tweeter-on-top standmounts as surrounds for a system where the rears are genuinely full-range. Overkill for a small room; exactly right if you're running 702s up front.

Subwoofer

• DB4S — Single 10in Aerofoil driver, 1,000W amplifier, app-controlled room EQ. Compact, musical and more than enough for a 5.1 in a typical UK lounge.
• DB3D — Twin 8in drivers in opposed configuration so cabinet vibration cancels out, 1,000W, same app setup. Tighter and faster than the DB4S with more output; the step up for music as much as film.
• DB2D — Twin 10in opposed drivers, 1,000W. Deep, effortless bass for large rooms or anyone who wants cinema-level impact without the sub ever sounding strained.
